Home Owner’s Series – Home Insurance Policies: What’s Covered, What’s Not and What you Need to Know

Homeowners insurance can be a complicated matter for even the most seasoned veteran of home ownership. For the First Time Buyer it can seem impossible to understand, It has been my experience that the agent you pick can have a major impact on the way your claims are handled. Interview several, even after you have selected a company. when you find someone you can work with, who will work for you when there is a claim is a key.

In addition, do not be afraid to push back when you have a claim if you think the process is not being handled well. This is especially true if you have “Replacement Coverage”. Work with the adjuster to make sure your home gets put back to the condition it was in prior to the claim, understand and agree on how depreciation will be handled and if you find you cannot work with the adjuster, ask for a review and another adjuster.
